Primary Summer School


Children don’t stop developing just because school is out.  In fact, the three months of summer are equivalent to one full trimester of the school year.  That’s a lot of time!  Research suggests that during the summer months many children experience a regression in knowledge called “backslide”.  This means that when some children return to school in the fall, they actually know less than they did the previous spring. Sometimes, up to a month of review must take place before a child regains the knowledge forgotten over the summer!  Luckily, research also shows that children who engage in meaningful academic and environmental activities during the summer months experience less or no backslide in knowledge.  Riverway Learning Community’s Primary Summer Program is designed to provide those meaningful experiences to children in the Kindergarten, Elementary 1 and Elementary 2 classrooms so that they are ready for the new year in the fall.


The Primary Summer Program meets three days a week: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 am—2:00 pm. This year’s format will be theme based, introducing some exciting new elements while retaining some of the students’ favorites activities.

Each week’s theme will be presented in a book around which other activities will be based. Each Tuesday and Thursday will consist of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) project, Writers Workshop, Environmental Education (including gardening), and Reading Groups. 

Wednesdays will continue with the tradition of going to Whitewater State Park.  Each morning the students will work with the Park’s naturalist while the afternoons will be filled with unstructured free time so the children can explore nature in a safe, supervised  manner.  This will include *swimming at the Whitewater beach. 

*Swimming suit and towel required each Wednesday.

*Important Notes*

*Transportation will be provided in the morning only.  Students must be picked up by 2:00 pm at the school except for gardening dates (TBD).  On those dates the students must be picked up at the Redeemer Gardens.

*There is a one time, non-prorated field trip fee of $30.

*Students must bring their own lunch from home.

*Each students registered before June 1st will receive a T-shirt.
