School Nutrition Leader/Food Service Director – Riverway Learning Community
Riverway seeks a School Nutrition Leader/Food Service Director (Full-Time 1.0) who serves as the head chef and lead organizer for our farm-to-table and from-scratch food program starting in August for the 2022-2023 school year. The position is salaried, competitive, and includes health insurance.
Daily service for 130-200 students/staff includes breakfast between 8-8:30am, classroom snacks, and lunch between 11-12:30pm. The approximate hours worked are 6am-2pm. The position is salaried and includes approximately 180 days per year corresponding with the school schedule.
There is freedom in creating menus and recipes as well as a menu of established meals and recipes. We have gardens that support our environmental purpose and program by growing some of our own food. There is also an educational component that involves teaching high school students how to shop for and prepare a week’s worth of meals.
The commercial kitchen is large and well designed. It sits in the main building of the college campus we are part of. Relationships with local vendors for food orders are established and ongoing. The position is currently supported by one (1) food service assistant who is dedicated and experienced.
The former food director for the school will train you and is available for consultation throughout the year.
The food program is a star component of our school district and we serve the larger campus we are on at Minnesota State College Southeast. As the hand that feeds us, this position provides the opportunity to earn legendary status.
Licensure and Certification Requirements:
ServSafe Certification (required: training can be provided)
MN Food Manager License
High School Diploma
Associates Degree or higher in FoodNutrition, Management, Dietetics, Nutrition
Education, Culinary Arts, or Hospitality
2+ years commercial kitchen work experience is preferred
Experience ordering both small and large quantities of food from local distributors
Experience working with children is helpful
Some experience with management is a benefit
Good communication skills and the ability to write is needed
Menu planning and preparation that meets all state and federal guidelines
Meals meet all safe food handling guidelines
Ordering and delivery processing and storage
Experience or willingness to write grants and proposals with assistance is needed
Organizational and future planning skills are a must
Flexibility to adapt to schedule changes or food sensitivities
Experience cooking for a variety of allergies and special dietary requirements is needed
Consistency in work attendance
Documentation of required compliance steps
Recording needed for the Department of Education and Agriculture
Independence and both legal and ethical use of time and materials
About the School:
Riverway is a public charter school district with a 20-year history. The primary school (70 students) is Montessori and the secondary school (60 students) is problem-solving focused. There is a waiting list at nearly all grade levels. There are approximately 35 staff.
We have a farm-to-table and from-scratch food program that sets us apart. We provide approximately 100-200 meals with each service.
The school sits on approximately 10 acres of greenspace with mature trees, waterfront, and rock/bluff views. We have 2 buses and 2 vans which provides access to our 180-acre school forest and surrounding state parks and the Mississippi Wildlife Refuge.
The Driftless Region has excellent outdoor activity options including boating, biking, hiking, camping, hunting, and fishing. Mississippi River history and culture is also a feature of the area.
